<br />
i recently noticed that i did not have a second copy of his short-printed 1971 topps super card, so i took a look on check out my cards. that's when i spotted this beauty:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhRvSRMcPDXF8jDZcHA6N-gGfccjXIBbIA_rML-Ns3ZW5gllGsWFzb_ieywoCpr2z9ylkriNc5gFrM5a8YhBzaGLog2xLK-4-_c8Q3JHYN9W0OK4VZGw1Q5A9e5knsmB1MkwqnBYw7GBUI/s1600/misc_1971_topps_allen_super.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhRvSRMcPDXF8jDZcHA6N-gGfccjXIBbIA_rML-Ns3ZW5gllGsWFzb_ieywoCpr2z9ylkriNc5gFrM5a8YhBzaGLog2xLK-4-_c8Q3JHYN9W0OK4VZGw1Q5A9e5knsmB1MkwqnBYw7GBUI/s640/misc_1971_topps_allen_super.jpg" width="434" /></a></div>
looks like little timmy tried to paint rich in to a white sox uniform, or perhaps a few years later, back in to a phillies uniform. or maybe someone wanted to see what allen would look like as a member of the big red machine. however, time has taken its toll and the paint is chipping away to reveal the dodger blue underneath. glorious.<div style="text-align: left;">

Many early examples of baseball cards are actually advertisements for different retail shops. The Tobin Color Lithographs stand out from others that came out in the era because of the detailed caricatures. It's a small set of ten cards, but the lineup is very impressive.<br />

I can't even decide which I like the most. They all have a strange appeal. The cards remind me of the illustrations in a Humpty Dumpty storybook I read when I was very young.<br />
<br />
I would be hard pressed to find them in my collection because my team did not exist yet, but I would never say no to having them in my collection. I love all the oddities you can find and the great artwork out there, if you just dig a little. This set is definitely out of Topps' comfort zone.Steve Giermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10291911419511893670noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423800617885115524.post-18595640052714421652019-03-02T07:30:00.000-06:002019-03-02T07:30:06.840-06:00Rally SquirrelKeep this in mind, when you are struggling to find cards of your favorite common player...<br />
<br />
The Rally Squirrel has not one, not two, but five cards out there.<br />
<br />
On cardboard, it started with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpRuOLItQ0mg95Gdd5IjTxQ6vSYE-w-5xR6PlguL0GjJOTw_0p8W4UvOPwNrORknwMK4-fSCz7pgOBqoeH45UC_BE1zQZtwvku2qK4g_ymSW8Wh5-H5wVTQWNLULjKWD_U8sDA3v586ck/s1600/2012ToppsRallySquirrel2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="350" data-original-width="245" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpRuOLItQ0mg95Gdd5IjTxQ6vSYE-w-5xR6PlguL0GjJOTw_0p8W4UvOPwNrORknwMK4-fSCz7pgOBqoeH45UC_BE1zQZtwvku2qK4g_ymSW8Wh5-H5wVTQWNLULjKWD_U8sDA3v586ck/s320/2012ToppsRallySquirrel2.jpg" width="224" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZK-2zCWf2qMEkMGNAm8UfyxgGYzW1CSgW4PManmQ9lkkE-k0ee_Ysa-E5SCkOCkXf3hyT2lPtr1ElmP-1pMAaHv53qpSx-pY-Ltq8RqJQ4_Zo3zH6I6G4aRv3N2tpUYtskHncuoTK4Bo/s1600/2012ToppsRallySquirrel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1139" data-original-width="1600" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZK-2zCWf2qMEkMGNAm8UfyxgGYzW1CSgW4PManmQ9lkkE-k0ee_Ysa-E5SCkOCkXf3hyT2lPtr1ElmP-1pMAaHv53qpSx-pY-Ltq8RqJQ4_Zo3zH6I6G4aRv3N2tpUYtskHncuoTK4Bo/s320/2012ToppsRallySquirrel.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Wanting to explore the league a bit, Rally Squirrel found itself in Philadelphia in 2015.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicvCFOnYAwxYIDLcEL09N2YAskJSp1uMrF1WTFC87HPgCWeTjKBgfD3zB7MqnFG_ZrSDXOaG12YjVXp4ntha74nxUgftWHDxuxcHIGzyKvYpXhSYVUshLQiH7vaZggX1Me1DhT0_BZb-E/s1600/2015RallySquirrel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="744" data-original-width="1084" height="219" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicvCFOnYAwxYIDLcEL09N2YAskJSp1uMrF1WTFC87HPgCWeTjKBgfD3zB7MqnFG_ZrSDXOaG12YjVXp4ntha74nxUgftWHDxuxcHIGzyKvYpXhSYVUshLQiH7vaZggX1Me1DhT0_BZb-E/s320/2015RallySquirrel.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
But Rally Squirrel had had enough of the transient life. It longed for its first home. By 2018, he ended back with the St. Louis Cardinals. All is right with the world again. Rally Squirrel had come home.<br />

2018 Topps Dynasty Autographed Patch Gold #AP-BH5 - Bryce Harper (1/1)<br />
<br />
While there are some stupid relic cards out in the collecting world (<i>pens anyone?</i>), this "relic" at least is part of a uniform. The tag off of a uniform.<br />
<br />
Topps Dynasty is for the collector that likes to blow "stupid money", as the Phillies like to say. So maybe the Phillies management will go in for this Bryce Harper autographed card with laundry tag relic that is a one of one. I mean it's only $3,999.99 plus $29.99 shipping on eBay. That's a bargain! Especially if you open a PayPal credit card account. That way it's only $167 per month for twenty-four months! Interested yet? Me either.<br />
<br />
While I have the lofty, never attainable goal of getting a copy of every card ever made of my favorite team, I would never be able to get a card like this. Nor would I necessarily want it. The concept seems gaudy. The execution looks like it came from the mind of a five year old. My apologies to all five year olds out there. Also, my apologies if this card is your cup of tea. It's just not mine.<br />
<br />
This card is a nice dream perhaps, but as a realistic goal... not so much.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hey. You know who could afford this card? I heard Bryce Harper just got a boat load of cash. Manny Machado did too. Maybe they could buy it and hand it out to a random fan. That sounds nicest of all.</div>

I present to you... the "Player Used Pen Relic"!<br />
<br />
Bryce's expression pretty much says it all. Just when I think I've found all the idiotic relics out there, I find pictures of this one. It's a 1/1, so you know it's worth something.<br />
<br />
:::eye roll:::<br />
<br />
At least this relic is signed, so there is some kind of value attached to the card. Pens, tablecloths... is there no end to the madness? If this is the state of the hobby, I might have the wrong hobby.<br />
<br />
I would be a little angry if I found this in a pack of Topps Tier One. I'd laugh a little too, but that's just me. I don't necessarily want this in my collection, so what kind of resale value would something as "unique" as a pen relic have? It helps that Bryce's signature is on it. It helps that Bryce Harper is one of the most talked about players in the game at the moment. That would push the value up. What would someone be willing to pay for something like this though?<br />
<br />
A quick scan of eBay shows that a 1/1 Bryce Harper autographed card is selling on average for $500. Does the used pen add to that value or detract from it? How much would you be willing to pay for a used pen piece? What if it what used by your favorite superstar player? How much would you pay now? What if I threw in a scowling picture of said superstar? How much would you pay? Still not convinced? Final offer. The pen piece, the scowling picture, his autograph and it's the only one out there. It's one of a kind! How much would you pay now?<br />
<br />
It seems like Topps is trying to sell Ginsu knives on a late night commercial. Maybe Sham-Wow (<i>it's a sham! Wow!</i>) or something. Have the card companies grave robbed all the relics? Will Indiana Jones have to come ot of retirement to steal them all back?<br />
<br />
As you can see, there are way more questions than actual answers when it comes to relics like this. The question still remains... how much would you pay for this card?Steve Giermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10291911419511893670noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423800617885115524.post-89804050254928784052019-02-23T09:58:00.001-06:002019-02-23T09:58:17.434-06:002019 Topps Now Manny Machado Relic<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I like the idea of Topps Now. It's basically a card on demand system that allows you to order cards of selected events for a 24 hour window. Nice, huh?<br />
<br />
Recently, Topps Now has gotten parallel crazy, much like their brick and mortar releases. This card is available in regular for $9.99. It also has relic parallels.<br />
<br />
A relic parallel numbered to 99 is $39.99. A relic parallel numbered to 49 is $69.99. A relic parallel numbered to 25 is $99.99. A relic parallel numbered to 10 is $149.99. A relic parallel numbered to 5 is $249.99. A relic parallel numbered to 1 is $799.99.<br />
<br />
Did I mention that the relic is a tablecloth?<br />
<br />
<b>RANT MODE ON:</b><br />
<br />
<i>Of all the idiotic, stupid, money grabbing schemes that Topps could think of, this one takes the cake! I understand game used items. It's part of the appeal of getting closer to the game. Uniforms, bats, bases, and dirt. These are all things that either were used in a game or had the potential to be. I can even see stadium seats, since that is an integral part of the game experience and the ambience of the sport. But a tablecloth that was used at the announcement of a signing? What idiot thought this was a good idea? What possible connection does a tablecloth have to the game. If you want to have a connection to a player at a major signing, take the uniform jersey that he was wearing, not the tablecloth. Did someone eat paint chips as a kid? Who the hell thought this was a good idea? They should be suspended. This relic makes me want to have a picnic, not see a baseball game.</i><br />
<br />
<b>RANT MODE OFF:</b><br />
<br />
I'm glad that Manny Machado did not sign with the team I follow. I would not want to feel at all compelled to entertain the thought of purchasing this relic to complete a collection. This is probably one of the stupidest "relics" I have seen. It makes of mockery of the entire relic system. The only reason for these cards is a quick cash grab. I'm not going to judge if you want one of these cards. That is your personal preference. I just don't see a reason for it.<br />
<br />
I'm all about living in the moment. I love the idea of Topps Now. This is a monstrosity. A travesty. A disgrace to card collecting. Those are just my thoughts, though.<b></b>Steve Giermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10291911419511893670noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423800617885115524.post-55433806341436276812017-04-04T19:55:00.000-05:002017-04-04T19:55:09.381-05:00the devil in dan mcginnfor the record, i am a fan of the 2015 topps buybacks. i like the stamp that was added to the cards much more than the 75th anniversary stamp that was on 2014 topps buybacks, and much more than the multi-colored 65th anniversary stamps that were on 2016 topps buybacks. i have purchased many lots and singles of the 2015 buybacks in an effort to acquire as many dodgers as i can.<br />
<br />
sometimes there are other gems in those lots, such as this 1971 topps dan mcginn card<br />

what might have possessed a person, assumedly a youth, to disfigure this card to such a degree? here, for the record, is the back of the card, which features a clean-shaven mcginn, unaltered by dastardly sketching.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
mcginn didn't pitch in the big leagues in 1971 until june, so perhaps the owner of the card was disappointed to open a first series pack and get a guy who wasn't on a major league roster at the time. or, perhaps this fan was listening to a game in which mcginn pitched poorly, of which there were several during the 1971 season. my guess is that the card's owner figured out that mcginn's presence in a game was a curse against the expos, as the team lost 25 of the 28 games in which mcginn appeared during the 1971 season, including the last 22. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
regardless of the reason, i envy the person who opened a pack of cards in 2015 and found this card.</div>

As I flipped it over I was a little confused but the plot thickened.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAZH8LIMcZ2ouCmlKbb8VrLAuU-CaXMpWA0dWM8lT3jeNWPNRmnK54kfvcFE5ojfHM6CgWZGU2P242QXTHvlTsz_U9AFoyjJxnAPIErIL6YhGGSDpD6vKr4bPHfJXEo5jQWaGjMzbhum8/s1600/IMG_20120625_154438.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAZH8LIMcZ2ouCmlKbb8VrLAuU-CaXMpWA0dWM8lT3jeNWPNRmnK54kfvcFE5ojfHM6CgWZGU2P242QXTHvlTsz_U9AFoyjJxnAPIErIL6YhGGSDpD6vKr4bPHfJXEo5jQWaGjMzbhum8/s640/IMG_20120625_154438.jpg" width="414" /></a></div>
<br />
I didn't remember Wilson Alverez having one of those cards like Rickey Henderson's 1991 Upper Deck card which showed Rickey in motion on a single non-3D card.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoXoZMxx8HokEY2OStCfn842XkXderTF9FQbU2Iynawon155WRou1a7fLBqjKJm5QQVCNF-sgXBw_FV7iMgtbtS0mRE6wv18aDZM0T0cgrso19YtFLrtd3qI8S7o25Kx3BUFWk0OijDcg/s1600/Rickey+Henderson+Running.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="454" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoXoZMxx8HokEY2OStCfn842XkXderTF9FQbU2Iynawon155WRou1a7fLBqjKJm5QQVCNF-sgXBw_FV7iMgtbtS0mRE6wv18aDZM0T0cgrso19YtFLrtd3qI8S7o25Kx3BUFWk0OijDcg/s640/Rickey+Henderson+Running.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Instead upon closer inspection it turns out someone had three copies of the Alverez card and decided to make their very own shadow box cards. Each version of Wilson seems to be delicately cut out and glued on top of one another.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here's a close up on three Wilson faces on top of each other:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiqMzd4chHB-V0BXixpdLr2b4JX5BemKnHn8-fNYW9dfCFUi3gGHSXUwf0gfttA4m8cNv10I8pTcCpQ2khI6NfOtBjJC4qqmLg8eIRx3bxQ7UDnwcyFehlfQr-EvSjw_2P2B9qPIPBsYY/s1600/IMG_20120625_154507.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="464" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiqMzd4chHB-V0BXixpdLr2b4JX5BemKnHn8-fNYW9dfCFUi3gGHSXUwf0gfttA4m8cNv10I8pTcCpQ2khI6NfOtBjJC4qqmLg8eIRx3bxQ7UDnwcyFehlfQr-EvSjw_2P2B9qPIPBsYY/s640/IMG_20120625_154507.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

And here's the card's reverse side which was unaltered.<br />

In the end, I delicately placed this masterpiece back into the box after photographing it and so you can sort through the many boxes at Uncommon Sportscards in the Twin Cities it can be yours!Matt Flatenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01157226107144209201noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423800617885115524.post-57736094443802807522012-08-26T23:09:00.003-05:002012-08-26T23:09:54.888-05:00Tony Micelli 1982 Fleer Mock Up<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

When I ran across this picture of actor Tony Danza, I suddenly remembered that his character on Who's The Boss was an ex-ballplayer. This is what I get for doing homework in front of the television as a child. Random pop culture facts speed to the front of my thoughts as if the synapses cannot be bothered with trivial things like pin numbers and passwords. Nope. Tiny little details from eighties sitcoms are much more important than those.<br />
<br />
Basing this card on the timeline of the show (although the sitcom never actually specifies any date), Tony played with the St. Louis Cardinals at second base until a shoulder injury forced early retirement. The show started in the fall of 1984. September 20, 1984 to be exact. I figured two years would be a plausible enough amount of time from injury to rehab to retirement to searching for a better life for his daughter by looking in the want ads for live-in housekeeper in a more upscale environment than Brooklyn. It sounds about right to me, at least.<br />
<br />
This photo screamed 1982 Fleer, so that became my focus. The odd angle, weird positioning and lens flare really captured the top notch photography that marred the early Fleer sets. The out of place coloring on the "uniform" seems about right for the sometimes spotty photos from these sets too.Steve Giermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10291911419511893670noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423800617885115524.post-50636529008312130582012-05-15T10:29:00.002-05:002012-05-15T10:29:29.226-05:00Cross-post: White Sox...Baseball Cards???<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Signed the little brother up for the (free) Chicago White Sox Kids Club for this year. I think I sent in the request in February or sometime then. Just yestiddy, though, we received a packet in the mail from the Sox. When asked if he wanted the swag, my brother gave a conclusive "no." It had some interesting things, actually, like this Paul Konerko "Fathead" sticker thing. The Sox logo and kids club logo are also stickers. </div>

1987 Donruss, anyone?! The design used for the stickers is actually a nice spin-off, I think. Sharp team colors, and a conspicuous absence of that 1980's look of red, white, and...navy? Cool stuff. </div>

The store was great, and the shop owner, Brooks, was friendly as I asked him some general questions about his shop and business.<br /><br /><br />One of the things I thought was awesome about the store was that there was a box full of 1961 Topps and 1962 Post (previously reviewed <a href="http://thingsdonetocards.blogspot.com/2008/08/1962-post.html">here</a>). The 1962 Post set was really cool to me, especially. Ended up with these two cards from that box that included Orlando Cepeda and Maury Wills...<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 401px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 290px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720206316552898098" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7h_ixP6TqzUwYWdrK9B14FBcPsXn-F6W-UDbkenH9Ecfnryvd0PJ0lu2zZ9jczhBwhpt2syjERvjVs5E5qguSSV5AlA0J2g31IQCn9plgXnOPRZtuq7TYjSX2H1QWrTR1J8xBr_aGp4XK/s400/1962+Post+Cereal+Harvey+Haddix.jpg" /><br />Harvey Haddix card. If you're a real baseball fan, you know his story. (I actually managed to squeeze this card into a penny sleeve, not so with this next card.)<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 323px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720206848518407666" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9-k2t6vSme8TQWGzSXp_vI_BUt_ytCClMVMKy81qKADsraGDxOcptsC8Ll085xjocS0tSdp7GUgkpLlh7VdeLjoxyJXaj1FdAnWtRsj0aDXPb1B_srkNQ1TMIzI8nDuSVWdiffskWJVy9/s400/1962+Post+Cereal+Baltimore+Orioles+player.jpg" />As soon as I saw this one, I had to have it, forgoing the one with a Giants player with a rip across his face. The (hopefully) kid that did this back in 1962 gave Ron Hansen a ski-mask-looking thing over his face, and a "beany." Ron is exhorting us to look at his "cop." I assume that by "BALLS" the kid was referring to Hansen's eyeballs. That's just a guess, though. [the middle bubble reads, "Tweet," referring to Hansen's status as an <strong>Oriole</strong>] The corners are horrendously worn, making my efforts to put this in a penny sleeve hopeless. The card is also heavily creased, as you may be able to tell. </p><br /><br /><br /><p>However, this was a terrific card, and the Haddix balanced out the eccentricity of my purchase. The total price for both these? </p><br /><br /><br /><p>Three dollars. (By the way, I also snagged a Curt Schilling Donruss RC, Brandon Hicks 2010 Chrome RC, a Glavine, and a Cardinal-jerseyed Smoltz for $2. Total.)<br /><br />I love this hobby. </p>Chunterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05202917826458943805noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423800617885115524.post-53150284407643686582012-03-12T17:27:00.008-05:002012-03-13T08:51:29.253-05:001990 Upper Deck Baseball stickers<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Zn5roBoylNWR1p56zS-JyDjRC6wIYHIBDayFSbmYxtxHMj44ReW3qRTWTQprSTGKr7iyoz-4DdDOzS6F4_ZuQKAqoOCatzzZXyxro23EfSNuhh7b2shB79vwnELPRH6hTqGTRJLAt-3K/s1600/Sticker-CWX.jpg"><span style="color:#000000;">May it first be noted that this, being the fifth post of 2012 on TDTC, marks the passage of lasts year's post mark of four! This is a 2010 MCG card of Ichiro Suzuki. Incidentally, my good friend Wikipedia tells me that Ichiro's manager in 1994 was the one who convinced him to put "Ichiro" of the back of his jersey, instead of "Suzuki." Apparently it was part of some marketing deal. I dunno, it kind of annoys me that on all his cards he is referred to as "Ichiro." I mean, Albert Pujols has both names on his card. Should he have just his last name on there (or first?) Hm. (Does Ron Artest have "Metta World Peace on his basketball cards? By the way, I always read "Metta World Peace" with a deep voice.)<br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNl-Ms6DG-Jou3ynG8p03ciJFGMPFLI6wWfEfBhwohLmpTsfztFudd9YtdBmF0htAjRE-1cRofMqCvLvXTlPcW3htLuQpbR_uIug5C53kEUVAniw6KAyPQ3DFG2ACNVdz2ZOah4Gv6TrL4/s1600/topps+million+card+giveaway+card.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 368px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 288px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5709111486083170802" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNl-Ms6DG-Jou3ynG8p03ciJFGMPFLI6wWfEfBhwohLmpTsfztFudd9YtdBmF0htAjRE-1cRofMqCvLvXTlPcW3htLuQpbR_uIug5C53kEUVAniw6KAyPQ3DFG2ACNVdz2ZOah4Gv6TrL4/s400/topps+million+card+giveaway+card.jpg" /></a><br />Using the awesome power of my (other) good friend scissors, I lopped and cropped Ichiro out of his tilted posture to this:<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDh1wVwBvKd5wH8nbG54sVk4Jp-G-66w5125iUQ2tvMtDhDovs4kTB49yoqKO8hBpPR8_2ymmyKItFE9-P-eej7ifoJ8DayACOJeBcAKqaMzXkZ6fBcnxD0rllavo-Iw0nQ0VOTD9BBqOb/s1600/ichiro+card+mini.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 160px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 208px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5709111481432719938" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDh1wVwBvKd5wH8nbG54sVk4Jp-G-66w5125iUQ2tvMtDhDovs4kTB49yoqKO8hBpPR8_2ymmyKItFE9-P-eej7ifoJ8DayACOJeBcAKqaMzXkZ6fBcnxD0rllavo-Iw0nQ0VOTD9BBqOb/s400/ichiro+card+mini.jpg" /></a> I know what you're thinking-I lopped the bottom part off. Above I posted an image of a classic team card, the 1961 Detroit Tigers Team Card. This card sort of embodies the KISS model to me-the whole team, right there. Lately, though, especially in the years that I've started collecting (2008, 2010-2012) there's been some messing with that formula by Topps and Upper Deck. Take a look.<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIJJGgKpI3Zl9E1rCYAOr1TFatwIcJfTlAM4H4o49Wg2ptVO5f5L3ZlOjKaeAkA6qnv0FLSr2XMRTp25fjk4jo-vgFGWiPUCYvD4uLfU-L5zbk6rgDGgq4-dJ_yUKpjKl3GarmCp0r_sMt/s1600/Arizona+Diamondbacks+Team+Card+2007+Topps.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 368px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 288px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702097449147087250" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIJJGgKpI3Zl9E1rCYAOr1TFatwIcJfTlAM4H4o49Wg2ptVO5f5L3ZlOjKaeAkA6qnv0FLSr2XMRTp25fjk4jo-vgFGWiPUCYvD4uLfU-L5zbk6rgDGgq4-dJ_yUKpjKl3GarmCp0r_sMt/s400/Arizona+Diamondbacks+Team+Card+2007+Topps.jpg" /></a> Here's a classic card for you. The Diamondbacks, one of the newest franchises, congregating for the timeless team photo in the bleachers. Some of them are even smiling. Imagine that!<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvbb20KQKwGp1mgLub43wSwl9JVJ3OaKBLhDc4jZhhoKUG9NxMcT_uLBBRHmKsLZD7ZhgCwSVbOghAEv9S63C6JrjW9TGVRM2z8GbTn1gF7qGPWWnyDC2lHI2WldppRHQ0__Sk_udfeH2B/s1600/toronto+Team+Card+2008+Upper+Deck.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 272px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 368px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702097066772162882" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvbb20KQKwGp1mgLub43wSwl9JVJ3OaKBLhDc4jZhhoKUG9NxMcT_uLBBRHmKsLZD7ZhgCwSVbOghAEv9S63C6JrjW9TGVRM2z8GbTn1gF7qGPWWnyDC2lHI2WldppRHQ0__Sk_udfeH2B/s400/toronto+Team+Card+2008+Upper+Deck.jpg" /></a><br />Very next year-WHAT?!? Upper Deck portraying Scott Rolen on more than one card in a year set is enough for me to with they were out of the baseball card business! (A quick glance at the back, however shows that the next best player on the team at the time was...uh...Alex Rios. Never mind.) Anyway, there's one example of the "team" card...a player fielding spring training grounders. Any Jose Bautista Blue Jays from you in the comments section might make this a tad less awkward.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKLUySDXazA6FDBNeIypIRbYMYPuzRb17otwaAhrf1YQ9vRaUQRQ3-fltJKp_nN6zmXwAL2iBuP-2ZJ1ZziqM0uGoI7fwAa1sx2cSwjhlHu14R0y_y-vMvDRbr5an-huomnBdP468h6QJb/s1600/sf+gigantes+Team+Card+2008+Upper+Deck.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 368px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 272px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702097063366029250" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKLUySDXazA6FDBNeIypIRbYMYPuzRb17otwaAhrf1YQ9vRaUQRQ3-fltJKp_nN6zmXwAL2iBuP-2ZJ1ZziqM0uGoI7fwAa1sx2cSwjhlHu14R0y_y-vMvDRbr5an-huomnBdP468h6QJb/s400/sf+gigantes+Team+Card+2008+Upper+Deck.jpg" /></a><br />Speaking of less awkward, here's another "team" card. Tim Lincecum and...someone else. Better...but still feels like a representative sort of effort. I don't know that I like that. Why not just do away with the team card and have two player cards from this angle? On to the next card:<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo7EfTYJvLTXzGmS12IrBmziSK1T3oGjVknBtQGdNNiJqCMVvrO-YNQXSG_FG_t-J3_mawGh3PtrKHwr42d0j9hivDhxiHb_8d2AECm6gzzAI18G0w9J0WvkbAbtuutd8t1g_iTEhK85kN/s1600/Detroit+Tigers+Team+Card+2011+Topps.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 352px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 272px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702097057689075298" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo7EfTYJvLTXzGmS12IrBmziSK1T3oGjVknBtQGdNNiJqCMVvrO-YNQXSG_FG_t-J3_mawGh3PtrKHwr42d0j9hivDhxiHb_8d2AECm6gzzAI18G0w9J0WvkbAbtuutd8t1g_iTEhK85kN/s400/Detroit+Tigers+Team+Card+2011+Topps.jpg" /></a> Here's the 2011 Topps rendition of the Detroit Tigers team. Brennan Boesch and Miggy Cabrera. I still really don't like this. Is Topps implying that the Detroit Tigers play with two players every game? On another odd observation (maybe Topps really <em>does</em> have too many inserts this year) these guys probably have a Diamond Duo insert somewhere...<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX6Xdk27cjJ12hd7wOrdD1oIbmpucHxEYIMMpzo4LM-aL6spdwAKJWdFQZHZG2aukBhywoL_Hm0mwcb84lu5YMJB6SEQ_Hi7ZqqYAt5QkLFoF2LQofSdcozr2l7U9u1_JN9oSZMP0OnR4b/s1600/c+white+sox+Team+Card+2011+Topps.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 352px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 256px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702097054069294434" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX6Xdk27cjJ12hd7wOrdD1oIbmpucHxEYIMMpzo4LM-aL6spdwAKJWdFQZHZG2aukBhywoL_Hm0mwcb84lu5YMJB6SEQ_Hi7ZqqYAt5QkLFoF2LQofSdcozr2l7U9u1_JN9oSZMP0OnR4b/s400/c+white+sox+Team+Card+2011+Topps.jpg" /></a> Here's a slightly more classic example. You know what, this feels about right. It's not <em>posed</em>, per se, though they are smiling for the camera, and they've obviously just wrapped up a game, so they're all in uniform and (presumably) smiling after a win.<br /><br /></div><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSu9P0h9hyI4aTw-EbfQyHv2gkURKUcRHAl5iLIeJZebSPakwi7PVZ6dcXTffk9KzWdPLXbA63JTGsdue97urQMLPFp9Nv8KDf0t7QfxILGeKiCbDkm2Imf1iccjm4EyNM0ng3Nyprza-J/s1600/Philadelphia+Phillies+Team+Card+2005+Topps+Heritage.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 368px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 256px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702096327597744434" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSu9P0h9hyI4aTw-EbfQyHv2gkURKUcRHAl5iLIeJZebSPakwi7PVZ6dcXTffk9KzWdPLXbA63JTGsdue97urQMLPFp9Nv8KDf0t7QfxILGeKiCbDkm2Imf1iccjm4EyNM0ng3Nyprza-J/s400/Philadelphia+Phillies+Team+Card+2005+Topps+Heritage.jpg" /></a>So there you have it. Here's a final Topps Heritage classic version team card.</div><br /><br /><div>I had a couple of other 2011 Topps cards with more players in the shots, but the White Sox card really seemed best to me. Another card I didn't post was the 2010 Tigers "franchise history" card, which (I think) showed a statue inside the ballpark. Hm. Somewhere, there's a fine line between cards in a Baseball set, and promotional cards you get in a fan pack, I think.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Chunterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05202917826458943805noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423800617885115524.post-40268307797522041412011-06-01T19:23:00.001-05:002011-06-01T19:28:50.148-05:001999 Workman Publishing Baseball TarotAs I am oft to do, I randomly searched Amazon for baseball-related material. I don't quite remember the combination of terms that led me here, but I found myself intrigued and perplexed by an offer for something called, "Baseball Tarot." I believe it cost me five bucks. Maybe not even that much. Brand new.<br />
<br />
I will say the packaging is quite ingenious. The whole thing comes a thick fold-out arrangement with the book (with which to interpret the cards) on one side (it can be removed for easier reading) and the deck of 78 cards on the other. Since this was new, I had to remove the celophane from the package and from the cards.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPEmsuBick84yQT5-yEehPezaYxRj3QxRB0Od8kyfO_TtJEiwvVyLh36raYYdRk9KxfFuNrJHw9qAKGaz0UYw7rOp4Xqtbjp7pbShGuJzfGPOVbxHrbbFKgeEhFG9DTMMRaUV893HQtBlV/s1600/tarot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPEmsuBick84yQT5-yEehPezaYxRj3QxRB0Od8kyfO_TtJEiwvVyLh36raYYdRk9KxfFuNrJHw9qAKGaz0UYw7rOp4Xqtbjp7pbShGuJzfGPOVbxHrbbFKgeEhFG9DTMMRaUV893HQtBlV/s400/tarot.jpg" t8="true" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I know very little to nothing about tarot, other than I know one shuffles the cards, deals them, then flips them over in a certain arrangement in order to decipher one's future - or something. I dunno. Anyway, this is the same thing, but relates the entire process to baseball. I found the tie-in quite clever and amusing. <br />
<br />
The cards are divded into two "sections" or "categories" for lack of better words - "The Majors" and "The Minors." The majors contain cards depicting "The Rookie," "The Legend," "The Manager," etc. The Minors are further broken down into "suits:" The Suit of Balls, The Suit of Bats, etc. Each card has a baseball-related term (or terms) associated with it and those terms are then parlayed into life lessons: Error, Triple Play, Home Run, Shake Off... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Nix8cgQY0yICxyP0DgotkIxCCsP1eEe9QG8M1GXyov8Qp8bfRbhOm1LK5ACq6WhXN7eT2ku04qIKvbbtHsBtDW2stNp7ajtMOg8Rk8Cs0plZArBhp06Afw38hCwRSB1rhjQo95qT83UZ/s1600/tarot+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Nix8cgQY0yICxyP0DgotkIxCCsP1eEe9QG8M1GXyov8Qp8bfRbhOm1LK5ACq6WhXN7eT2ku04qIKvbbtHsBtDW2stNp7ajtMOg8Rk8Cs0plZArBhp06Afw38hCwRSB1rhjQo95qT83UZ/s320/tarot+001.jpg" t8="true" width="320" /></a></div><br />
As you can see, the cards are quite a bit bigger than a standard card (shown by the 1987 O-Pee-Chee Dennis Lamp above).<br />
<br />
The book is very well thought out, I have to admit. I really expected some goofy baseball tie-in, and though there is certainly some of that in the book, much of it actually can be applied to baseball and life (in terms of the writing and organization. What you do with the actual readings is in your hands, as it were). For example, when laying out the cards, one can employ a "Ball, Strike, Out" or a "Who, What, I Dunno" or a myriad of other baseball-related scenarios. Each scenario is explained for the person wishing to partake in a reading.<br />
<br />
How one interprets each card is also related to baseball: Are you ahead of the count or behind it when the card is drawn? Are you in the ballpark? What's the signal? and so forth...<br />
<br />
Though I don't give a rip (pun intended, after all we are talking about a "pack" of cards here) about tarot readings and the like, I think the tie-in to America's pasttime was (is) very well executed in this little package. For the novelty alone, it was worth the five bucks I spent.--Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03884046413767054746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423800617885115524.post-82414619451063500132011-03-27T22:40:00.004-05:002011-04-12T13:04:15.807-05:00Follow My Career...I recently made a trip to my local card shop. The owners are nice enough to put up with my hours of searching for Bip Roberts, Don Mossi, Dick Pole, Pete LaCock, and Rowland Office cards. They also, on occasion, will set aside cards that they think I might appreciate.<br />
<br />
They knocked it out of the park on my last visit. After searching through a box of '60s commons, in an attempt to fill out my Don Mossi collection, a stack of cards were set in front of me. <br />
<br />
Quite possibly the most amazing stack of cards... EVER!<br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Thirty well-worn cards from 1958, and one from 1959 were in my hands. It was easy to see that the original owner genuinely cared for these players. Not the cards... but rather, the players on the cards. On each card, the owner carefully traced the progression of the player's career in ball-point pen. Most of the players on the cards are tracked through the 1961 season.</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> As you can see from the example above, this kid was pretty thorough. As you can see, Lou (The Nervous Greek) Skizas was picked up by the White Sox (in the 1958 Rule 5 draft), he then played for Bermingham (sic) and Charleston in '58. The tracking ends with Seattle (1959). At some point, he played a little third base.</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

Pretty impressive...<br />

Not yet, at least. The only card I have before 1950 is a 1933 World Wide Gum card of Ralph Kress. I spotted this beauty on eBay and put in a token bid. I half expected to be outbid for this card, but I had a sliver of hope that the appalling condition of the card may scare other prospective buyers off. This is nothing more than a filler card. But that filler card is a vintage Luke Appling.<br /><br />The card has multiple creases, frayed edges, writing in two different colored inks... it was amazing. As outstanding as this card is, I wasn't going to pay more than a few bucks for it. There love for a well worn card and there's reality. For as much character as this card has, it's not worth getting into a bidding war.<br /><br />If you squint closely at the card, you can see that someone filled in the left side of the card with red ink. I have taken it upon myself to deduce that the seven "X"s that line the top represent his seven All-Star appearances. Although, I could be reading more into it than was ever there to begin with.<br /><br />Ah, but what would a colorful card front be without a back? A previous owner of this card came to the conclusion that Lucius (Luke) Appling was "good". That may be a bit of an understatement.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfrdj2CL2rSplRciJkAmRGaggL56sXRxF4hfRAJ7yMdDevd2wHJpzQht9ifOHlIDYpvYKvJ7PAoP2qfRLA83FZLR2GoyfVf5dPEDP8tMTBlooT9Cp90K_G_oqnrJc8JNa_yg77B7QsV8k/s1600/48LeafApplingBack.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 264px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfrdj2CL2rSplRciJkAmRGaggL56sXRxF4hfRAJ7yMdDevd2wHJpzQht9ifOHlIDYpvYKvJ7PAoP2qfRLA83FZLR2GoyfVf5dPEDP8tMTBlooT9Cp90K_G_oqnrJc8JNa_yg77B7QsV8k/s320/48LeafApplingBack.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588933796741154434" border="0" /></a>I tried, but I refuse to pay anything more than my maximum bid. Donruss and Fleer were both starting to make headway into the hobby, but they would still need a court decision to turn in their favor.<br /><br />In anticipation to the late 1980 court ruling, Donruss made prototypes for cards, so they weren't caught off guard by a quick decision.<br /><br />Donruss created three different prototypes. One of Reggie Jackson, one of George Brett and one of a blank card.<br /><br />As you can see, this design is in line with the first official baseball sets from Donruss. There are bright primary colors and lots of precise lines. Donruss took so much care in this prototype, that the pictures look better than some of the pictures actually used in the 1981 set.<br /><br />In fact, Donruss liked the picture of George Brett so much that they used it on two different cards in the 1981 set. Donruss used a cropped version of Reggie Jackson's prototype picture of one of his three cards in the 1981 set.<br /><br />The most amazing aspect of the 1980 Donruss prototype is how similar it appears compared to the 1980 Topps set. Both feature flags wrapped around the top and bottom of the card and a large area for a picture.<br /><br />Below is an uncut sheet of all three prototypes.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE-NXQuW18oFwBHtKBV2gYXaAcslPJiYhuq6XsjC2-pnUVWLl2l7ZR7fHGOPlQ9_d9zgC7lliwYwgC17Xm3vwgfApRUBcNmbYK5Y5AAo1z-Ei9n1s7zsXDQpWGyJkCrwaOUbycJXdCFzs/s1600/Brett-JacksonDonruss.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 160px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE-NXQuW18oFwBHtKBV2gYXaAcslPJiYhuq6XsjC2-pnUVWLl2l7ZR7fHGOPlQ9_d9zgC7lliwYwgC17Xm3vwgfApRUBcNmbYK5Y5AAo1z-Ei9n1s7zsXDQpWGyJkCrwaOUbycJXdCFzs/s320/Brett-JacksonDonruss.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571532502820274354" border="0" /></a>Steve Giermanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10291911419511893670noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423800617885115524.post-3930116285659595132010-09-23T04:41:00.001-05:002010-09-23T10:02:55.244-05:001912 T215 Pirate Cigarettes<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUwy8CyaWq7W_1pYTLVR56Qdj7I0SW6oudvMuB5wBcrpZSexB-bVAK058gxQ2J0sHCaFuhNDURh820wfSLWsF0ZvgYb8VgFtNPItScfbMM_WtXjattb_vAdVdUg4bLTCfJvj8fTkiO46s/s1600/PirateCigarettes.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 282px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUwy8CyaWq7W_1pYTLVR56Qdj7I0SW6oudvMuB5wBcrpZSexB-bVAK058gxQ2J0sHCaFuhNDURh820wfSLWsF0ZvgYb8VgFtNPItScfbMM_WtXjattb_vAdVdUg4bLTCfJvj8fTkiO46s/s320/PirateCigarettes.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520038161221912466" border="0" /></a>This is one of the rarest examples of a tobacco card. These cards were only issued to American and British military personnel in the South Pacific during 1912. The chances of these cards being stowed away for the trip back home are almost non-existent. Most that were stationed in the South Pacific at that time were merely looking for a smoke break and not a baseball card.<br /><br />There are 97 cards in the set, but no one is known to have a complete set. The closest was a 96 card set that sold for nearly one million dollars, including the auction fees. The only card missing was Danny Murphy. This set is so rare that in many instances each card only has one known copy.<br /><br />For those of you with American or British relatives that were stationed in the South Pacific in 1912, check out the items in their estate. If you find a cigarette pack that looks like this, you might have a slim chance of finding a rare card!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8yMOdJZvR1IKvxB6LC9yvrm4YskLyLIHr5oIQzBOrGCdq1gQiwmgBvnbOCZPxDgsOYGS4L4_DjKXs3-P0C2QtLBMjN8Qm61Y-_x-13NdLjs1xQQvJDxO-ZfNURlFt_WCf4eW-hWR3uRA/s1600/PirateCigarettesPack.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8yMOdJZvR1IKvxB6LC9yvrm4YskLyLIHr5oIQzBOrGCdq1gQiwmgBvnbOCZPxDgsOYGS4L4_DjKXs3-P0C2QtLBMjN8Qm61Y-_x-13NdLjs1xQQvJDxO-ZfNURlFt_WCf4eW-hWR3uRA/s320/PirateCigarettesPack.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520038161253337890" border="0" /></a>The cards are in a similar vein as the Red Cross backed cards, also considered a T215 set. I'm always for art infiltrating the hobby. Good or bad, the final result is always up to the consumer. These cards have proven very popular with the collectors that have a background in fine arts. Those who don't appreciate the skill of an artist may have a harder time liking these.<br /><br />The sketches are fine. I don't expect every drawing to look exactly like the player depicted. That's part of the fun of artwork. It allows you to peer into the mind of someone else and see the world through their eyes for a moment in time. No two people see the exact same things in any scenario. That's why a jury is made up of twelve people instead of just one person.<br /><br />I bought this sketch card a while back. It was listed as Jason Frasor of the Toronto Blue Jays. It looked enough like Jason Frasor to have me believe it is him, so I put in a bid and ended up winning this 1 of 1 card for around $10.<br /><br />I was a bit skeptical of Jason being portrayed on a sketch card. Middle relievers aren't usually the subject of special cards. It is Toronto, where people outside of Canada have a tough time knowing exactly who is on the Blue Jays team. Jason has been a part of the bullpen for several years. It made sense.<br /><br />The back of the card doesn't list a name, which was worrisome. I went to Beckett.com to upload the image. I believe that there should be a picture of every card available to the public, so I try to contribute when I can.<br /><br />There was a problem. I couldn't find a listing for Jason Frasor in this sketch set on Beckett's site. I'm used to not being able to find some cards when I search, only to find them later in a different search. I tried being less specific. Nothing. I tried just looking up Jason Frasor. This card was not among the list.<br /><br />Finally, I looked up the checklist from the set. There were several Blue Jays listed. I could rule out all but one. Roy Halladay. Does this card look like Roy Halladay? I'm not so sure. Did an artist submit a sketch of Jason Frasor and Topps just decided that a Caucasian Toronto Blue Jays pitcher must be Roy Halladay?<br /><br />The problem comes on the back of the card. There is absolutely nothing identifying the player as Roy Halladay or Jason Frasor or anyone else for that matter. I wouldn't expect the player's name to be on the front of a card like this. The sketch work is fine, but it's troubling that I would have to search to find out who this player is and still unsure after I see the answer.<br /><br />Either way, I have a nice card on my hands. I'm just undecided as whether it will be a permanent part of my collection or not. At first, I thought it was a general Peanuts card set. The more I looked at the wrapper I thought this might be worth checking out as a baseball-related item. Randomly inserted in packs was a "Stan Musial Hologram Card." I opened the pack immediately.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

The front of each card sports either a gold or silver border and a comic frame from one of Schulz's strips. I thought that was a pretty cool thing to do to cards in and of itself. But, when I turned the card over:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2DFZJ9NgdlMfnrp35SC_hO2-LW6ETZZbjB3C-TXu0zzR4oe-XuJbKn2ibHkAppKOixveoVaGFIKuRPQCHvt29FjSL86QUbRuN423UUvnXdqcMONNs3EJvwqaROinwznSEye02SMGpeRdS/s1600/244b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2DFZJ9NgdlMfnrp35SC_hO2-LW6ETZZbjB3C-TXu0zzR4oe-XuJbKn2ibHkAppKOixveoVaGFIKuRPQCHvt29FjSL86QUbRuN423UUvnXdqcMONNs3EJvwqaROinwznSEye02SMGpeRdS/s320/244b.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I saw that ProSport had printed the entire strip on the back! Not only do you get the frame on the front, but the context of the frame within the whole strip as well! What a great idea!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Of course, I did not pull the Musial hologram, but reading through the 10 comic cards was a thrill anyway. Aside from Bazooka Joe, I hadn't seen cards with comics on them like this.</div><br />
